2024 Season

Minimalism or Maximalism?

2023 was a season of boldness mixed with elements of minimalism and neutrality. There were spaces with royal blue painted walls coordinated with timber furnishings and soft velvet lounges. The rise of bouclè refused to calm its popularity with many variations of the classic fabric being created to suit all styles. People weren’t afraid to use colour and use it loud with golden mustards, burnt rusts and cottage core green.

To prepare you for 2024 and the projects yet to be created in the next twelve months we have itemised the top 5 trends we are ready to see in interior design and fabric choices across Australia.

Bouclè will stay…but what bouclè?

No one is ready for our 2023 favourite Desire to be put away with its timeless hidden herringbone, bold colours and soft touch there aren’t many reasons why it can’t be 2024’s fabric of choice. However while we have seen colours like Flame, Honey Mustard and Putty be the colours of choice, 2024 is pointing towards pink’s, grey’s and white’s to be center stage.

There’s also the question of what type of bouclè will be used in this new year? In 2023 interior designers weren’t afraid to use a hard textured bouclè with large piles to create a “wow factor”. But this year we can see it shifting towards the use of what is known as petit bouclè. Petit bouclè is generally soft to touch and has smaller piles making it more “fluffy” and appealing to designers and customers wanting a neat look.

In 2024, fabrics like Hevey, Michelle & Desire are the front runners for achieving this type of bouclè furniture.

Brown is the New Grey

For years (possibly even decades) we have seen grey as one of the main front runners for colours of large lounge suites and bedheads. There’s no question as too why this is the case, grey is easy to clean, exudes luxury and is easy to coordinate with accent cushions or chairs. However in 2024 there may be a new replacement for the favourite pick - Brown.

This colour works in conjunction with the rise of leather type fabrics that offer a warm and luxurious essence to a space. Colours like Brumby and Tan in City Club work well to achieve this effortless trend.

However, if you’re eager for something a little different the colours and texture of Zane may be the new choice for vinyl upholstery in 2024. Released in late 2023, Zane has a beautiful soft touch and heavy weight that makes it unique to the market.

Colours like Rust and Caramel are perfect for achieving the 2024 colour trend.

Digital Prints

For most of textile history jacquards have been the popular choice for patterned fabric, however in the digital age it is now easier than ever to create any design on most base cloths. Thus, in 2024, we may be seeing a lot more digitally printed fabric. Though, the question is - what patterns will we see?

With the popularity of colours like green, mustard, rust and blush we can assume that the types of patterns that we’ll see will be naturalistic and floral. In the past decade furnishing manufacturers and even RV companies leaned towards geometric and linear patterns as it was simple and easy to coordinate. However in 2024 with the boldness of colours, floral patterns can be used more widely and accepted by the general public.

Tradition Redefined

In 2023 we started to see a comeback in traditional or retro style furnishings especially from the mid 1970’s and timeless houndstooth inspired patterns. In 2024, this trend won’t leave us but it may be shifted a little. Rather than integrating one piece of furniture that has ties to decades before and using it as a statement piece, designers are leaning towards influencing an entire space with that inspiration.

However, the exciting part of bringing back classic designs and historical influences is the capabilities of modern technology that makes these traditional pieces redefined. This will mean that classicism may look just as modern in a 2024 home or commercial space.

Using a fabric like Bliss brings back the textures and weaves of the 1970’s but with it’s bold colours and incredible soft touch it has become a modern choice for upholsters with it’s sense of character and style. There’s no doubt that 2024 will be all about personality and the types of emotions a room can evoke and what better way to do that then bring back the fun loving and free spirit of the 1970’s.

Pinky Peach

Pantone’s release of their 2024 colour choice helped elevate the popularity of coral and pink hues. We could already see that elements of blush were being cooperated into rooms with ottomans and accent cushions however in the next twelve months we may see larger pieces taking on this colour.

Peach Fuzz oozes warmth and calmness. Its coral hues remind us of summer and brightness and it’s no surprise Pantone chose such a gentle colour with the troubling times the world has seen in the final months of 2023.

For interior design, Peach Fuzz acts as a gentle diffuser for bold colours such as white, black and grey. It’s welcoming tones can be used in accents such as patterns, scatter cushions, bed runners and more to invite warmth and ambience to a space.
